This is the ordinary manner for the upperpainting of the red draperies.
We’ve already seen that the other colors were painted differently.

Now the work is finished by painting a red glaze in oils on the girl’s dress.

The color is a Red Lake pigment (here a deep transparent red, like the madders),
with addition of black for the darker values.

This technique offers two advantages:

  1. If the Red Lake fades when exposed to light, at the same time the Vermilion blackens (or the Minium turns brown), what compensate to some extent the fading of the lake.
  2. When drying, the refractive index of the oil rises and the film becomes more transparent, but this is no problem because the brilliant red and white underpainting lights up the the glaze from underneath.
